My approach
My goal is to collaborate with you to accomplish your goals, to heal and to grow. Treatment includes learning new skills, identifying barriers to change, clarifying your values, establishing sustainable improvements in your life, and developing an understanding of your core self through our relationship. My primary theoretical orientation is Social Learning Theory with an emphasis on Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). I use treatment techniques from CBT, Mindfulness-based CBT, DBT, ACT, Existential therapy, Humanistic therapy, and Family Systems.

Finding a strong working relationship based on a good client-provider fit is the first task followed closely by identifying your concerns and your goals. You are essential to pursuing change. I bring knowledge, skill and some wisdom to help you find your path.

Practical considerations
Out-of-network provider
Dr. Bates is an out-of-network provider (OON) with all insurance plans including Medicare and asks for payment at the time of service. Almost all insurance providers offer reimbursement for OON services.. Speak with Dr. Bates about how to check on your insurance coverage and filing procedures.
In-person services in Chapel Hill
My office offers a comfortable and safe place. Clients often comment on the spacious light-filled space, comfortable waiting room, both equipped with HEPA filtration.
